TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hillsborough County Commission voted to participate in the state’s effort to audit local governments.

Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed an executive order creating a Department of Government Efficiency task force, or DOGE.

The newly created group will use technology and AI to look for government waste. The task force will audit colleges, universities, state agencies and local governments.

“What this measure does is it specifically sends the message to the governor’s office that we’re here and we support him and that we’re going to open up our books and let them have a look,” said Hillsborough County Commission Vice Chair Christine Miller, who said she worked with the governor’s office to come up with the measure.

On Wednesday, commissioners voted 6-1 to send a letter to the governor agreeing to fully participate and comply in the process and create a liaison committee.

The committee will help facilitate efforts by the DOGE task force. The liaison committee would be made up of five qualified Hillsborough County residents voted on by the board.

“Each member shall also possess at least one of the following educational and professional credentials, accountant, economist, finance, certified auditor, IT or human resource professional,” said Commissioner Miller.

As of now, participation from counties is voluntary.
