HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — A veteran who served our nation eight decades ago recently marked his centennial birthday with a heartwarming celebration.
On Christmas Eve, the Lowcountry community rolled out the red carpet for Dan Antenen, a World War II veteran. Upon his arrival at Hilton Head Island Airport from Ohio, Antenen was greeted like a hero, with a crowd applauding his entrance as he joined his family for the holidays.
“What does this mean to me?” questioned Mary McIlroy, Antenen’s daughter, her voice trembling with emotion. “The thought that anyone acknowledges the incredible contributions of these elderly veterans is truly remarkable.”
Initially, Antenen’s family requested a wheelchair from the airport to assist him from the plane to their car. This simple request inspired airport officials to reach out to the American Legion. Once this veteran’s visit was known, the Legion eagerly organized a special tribute for the Ohio Air Force veteran.
“It’s woven into the fabric of our nation’s history,” expressed Joe Buckingham, a fellow veteran and American Legion member. “Being part of this celebration adds a meaningful touch to his Christmas vacation and our collective heritage.”
Flags flew high inside the airport. More than half a dozen veterans told stories and smiled while talking with Dan. He even got a special quilt from the Palmetto Bay Quilt Guild to keep him warm this holiday. The gestures touched Antenen.
“It’s terrific. That’s what it is.” he said.
Mary seconded that feeling. “It’s fabulous anyone would honor these guys.”
And the honors didn’t end inside the airport. Dan got to ride out in style in a 1950’s El Dorado convertible with his own driver to take him to his family.
Antenen said his goal while he is here is to spend time with his kids, grandkids and great grandkids and one other thing: “I’ll learn what Hilton Head is all about.”
Dan isn’t done yet. His family says he is already looking forward to his 101st birthday, in about 6 weeks.
