CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Bethel AME Church, a historic Black church in Champaign, is marking a significant milestone as it celebrates Kwanzaa for the first time. This week-long holiday, which runs from December 26 to January 1, was established in 1966 as a tribute to Black cultural heritage and unity.

Reverend Terrance L. Thomas, pastor of Bethel AME Church, highlighted the importance of Kwanzaa by referencing its creator, Dr. Maulana Karenga. “Dr. Karenga developed this concept to empower us to identify and define ourselves,” he explained, underscoring the holiday’s emphasis on self-determination and cultural pride.
