'Horrendous' smell: Tampa woman wants apartment to clean up after body found in neighbors' unit

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A woman reached out to 8 On Your Side after a body was found in her neighbor’s apartment. Tory Castle said the complex hasn’t cleaned the apartment up after the incident and the smell is so bad she can’t go out her front door.

An apartment building at the Park at Lake Magdalene Apartments & Townhomes in Tampa has its door propped open. Deodorizers are on the bottom floor. But Tory Castle said the problem is coming from the unit upstairs, next to hers.

“It was Thursday morning that I finally made another call in about the smell. (It) was so horrendous I could not leave the front of my apartment,” Castle said. “Kind of like rotten eggs and cheese.”

Castle said over the course of a month, she asked the leasing office to check on her neighbor.

She noticed a package sat outside their door for a week and a half, she saw an eviction notice on the door, and then a lingering smell made its way into her apartment.

“I thought maybe he’s away and the food’s gone bad,” Castle said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office confirmed they were called to the apartment, where they found a dead body. But no other information was available by the time this story ran. Castle said the authorities removed the body.

“I will say the smell has dissipated with the body removal — it’s just not, it’s there, it is definitely there. You don’t want to use my front door right now,” Castle said.

She emailed the leasing office Friday saying the health department referred her to a biohazard and waste company, who Castle said told her the complex is legally bound to clean up the body, any biohazards, and smells as soon as they’re notified.

News Channel 8 went to the leasing office Tuesday and was told to contact corporate.

Castle was hesitant to talk about this but shares a vent with the unit where the body was found and is uncomfortable breathing in that air.

“My fear just right now is that I will get backlash from the apartment complex, and I don’t know what form that would be. But at this point it’s been what, five days, and they haven’t brought anyone in. I can’t imagine the bugs, I can’t imagine the contamination that’s going on in there,” Castle said. “I feel even a little bit bad doing this, however, something needs to be done. I’m dealing with the guilt aspect of having this dead neighbor with me for so long, I wish I had done more.”

Castle said lawyers have reached out to her to take more action, but at this point she’s unsure what her next steps will be. She said she just wants the apartment to take care of it.

“I just want to see the apartment cleaned up, I want to be able to use my front door,” Castle said.

Once 8 On Your Side gets more information on the death, we will update this story.
