PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) — Graduation events at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in Parris Island are set to be under heightened security, as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will be on site to verify the immigration status of attending family members.
Families planning to attend the graduation ceremonies this Friday are advised to prepare for additional screening procedures beginning Wednesday. To gain entry, visitors must present valid identification such as a Real ID, U.S. passport, or U.S. birth certificate, as reported by NBC News. Those without the appropriate documentation may face inquiries from ICE officials.
The move is part of increased security measures at the base, with signs at MCRD Parris Island indicating that federal law enforcement will be stationed at entry points. These officers will conduct “enhanced screenings and lawful immigration status inquiries” as part of the process.
An NBC News report highlights that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has clarified the situation, stating that any rumors of potential arrests by ICE at the graduation events are unfounded. The DHS confirmed that ICE will not be making arrests during the ceremonies at Parris Island.
