SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) – The Illinois Department of Aging is looking for candidates to join the Senior Illinoisans Hall of Fame.

This is an yearly initiative by IDoA to honor and celebrate seniors age 65 and older who made an impact in their communities through public service or their professions. Anyone looking to nominate someone who has made a remarkable impact in their community has until June 2 to submit their name.

“Whether it’s the teacher who goes the extra mile for their students or the neighbor who’s always ready to lend a hand, our seniors are the backbone of our communities — embodying kindness, generosity, and ingenuity,” Gov. JB Pritzker said. “I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to nominate the older adults in their lives whose impact deserves to be recognized and celebrated.”

Each year, the IDoA inducts four seniors into the Illinoisans Hall of Fame for their contributions through education, sports, community service, arts, labor and entertainment.

IDoA Acting Director Mary Killough urged residents to highlight someone deserving of the award.

“The Senior Illinoisans Hall of Fame honors outstanding older adults who have made and continue to make significant contributions to their communities,” Killough said. “If you know someone who fits this criteria, please nominate them to be recognized and celebrated.”

The Senior Illinoisans Hall of Fame first started in 1994. Ever since then, the IDoA has celebrated the accomplishments of 137 individuals as of 2023.

For a person to be eligible for the Hall of Fame, they must be 65 or older at the time of the nomination, reside in Illinois or have spent most of their life in Illinois. Any seniors 65 or older who lived in Illinois at the time of their death are also eligible for nomination.

Everyone is encouraged to nominate a senior who has contributed to their society. More information can be found on the IDoA’s website.
