The Illinois Fighting Illini basketball team is gearing up for a rare rematch against the Iowa Hawkeyes in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, marking their second face-off this season. This highly anticipated showdown offers both teams a coveted spot in the Final Four.

Following Illinois’ victory over Houston and Iowa’s triumph against Nebraska, these two Big Ten rivals are set to clash once more. Senior forward Ben Humrichous emphasized the significance of this encounter, stating, “With a chance to advance to the Final Four in Indianapolis, that’s where our focus is. Being familiar with each other as Big Ten teams definitely helps as we prepare with scouting and strategy.”

The Illini previously encountered the Hawkeyes on their home turf in January, where they secured a tight 75-69 victory. Despite leading by 17 points midway through the second half, Illinois had to battle hard to hold off a late surge from Iowa, a challenge that has tested them throughout the season.

Illinois played the Hawkeyes on their court back in January, pulling off a narrow 75-69 win. The Illini led by 17 halfway through the second half but had to work to fend off a late-game surge, something that has not always gone Illinois’s way this season.

“We learned a lot from that game,” said freshman guard Keaton Wagler. We got up early on them and let them back into the game. It’s something that we can’t do. Defensively, we got to stay focused, and offensively, we can’t have spurts or droughts, so just getting back focused, making sure that every possession, you know, we’re doing what we need to do.”

Humrichous also praised the Big Ten schedule as a whole for preparing the Illini for the tournament, both in terms of strength and daily preparations.

“Even with the way that the schedule is presented, you have quick turnarounds, quick scouts when like, you can win games and celebrate that moment, but then you have to mentally prepare for the next one,” said Humrichous.

Three-seed Illinois takes on nine-seed Iowa on Saturday at 5:09 p.m. in Houston, broadcast on TBS.
