In a significant move, the University of Illinois has solidified the future of its athletic department by extending the contract of its athletic director, Josh Whitman. This agreement was officially endorsed on Thursday, further anchoring Whitman’s tenure.
The University’s System Board of Trustees gave their nod to a revised long-term contract for Whitman on July 16. As highlighted in the meeting agenda, the Governance, Personnel, and Ethics Committee had already evaluated this proposal prior to the board’s approval.
This new arrangement extends Whitman’s leadership at the Illini until June 30, 2036. Starting at $2.15 million for the 2026-2027 period, his compensation will increase annually by $100,000, culminating with a $200,000 hike in his final year, taking his earnings to $3.15 million by the end of the term.
A lucrative annual retention bonus sweetens the deal for Whitman, offering a $500,000 incentive for each year he remains until the end of June.
Additionally, the contract features performance-based bonuses, capped at $500,000 yearly, further incentivizing excellence and commitment to the university’s athletic successes.
Up to three one-year performance based contract incentives could also be earned by Whitman, based on success of the Illinois men’s basketball and football programs. These extensions, from those two sports, may not go beyond 2039, according to the proposed document.
The document also states Whitman should receive 100% of his base salary if he were to be terminated without cause from his role at Illinois athletic director.
Notably, the deal, consistent with his previous contract, prohibits Whitman from accepting a job with any other college or university at any time during his employment agreement with Illinois.
In over 10 years in the role, Whitman has overhauled and brought success to a number of Illini sports programs through hirings of head coaches like Brad Underwood, Bret Bielema and Shauna Green.
The most recent athletic season saw the men’s basketball team reach its first Final Four since the 2004-05 season, the football team win a bowl game for the second consecutive season, and the women’s basketball team notch a NCAA Tournament win in its second straight year.
In 2024-25, for the first time in nearly 25 years, the Illini football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs were all ranked in the AP Top 25 at the same time. The football team also tied its single season best in school history with 10 wins — just the fifth time that feat has been accomplished in the program’s 134-year history.
Illinois was also only one of five schools last year to win a postseason bowl game and win games in both the men’s and women’s NCAA Basketball Tournaments. And of those five schools, Whitman is the only current AD to have hired all three of the involved head coaches.
