SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Republicans in the Illinois State Senate are voicing concerns that existing state laws are insufficient when it comes to safeguarding children from trafficking and exploitation. In response, they have introduced a new legislative initiative aimed at enhancing these protections.
This initiative is comprised of three proposed bills put forward by Senators Sally Turner (R-Lincoln), Darby Hills (R-Barrington Hills), and Sue Rezin (R-Morris). Among them, Turner’s bill takes a straightforward approach by addressing human trafficking directly. Her proposal seeks to elevate the severity of all trafficking-related crimes by increasing them by one felony class.
Currently, human trafficking offenses are classified as Class 1 felonies. If reclassified as Class X felonies, offenders would face the most severe penalties permissible under the law.
