In Champaign, Illinois, a legislative proposal is gaining traction that could see statewide regulations imposed on kratom products. This initiative mirrors actions already taken by Monticello, a city in Central Illinois, which instituted a ban on the sale of kratom products last year. Advocates of Monticello’s decision are now expressing their support for this broader regulatory measure.
Piatt County Board member Michael Beem emphasized the necessity of regulation, likening the current situation to a “Wild West” scenario. “At the moment, there is no regulation for kratom, whether synthetic or natural,” Beem stated. “Any substance has the potential to be synthesized into something more dangerous, and it’s crucial that we have protective measures in place to prevent this.”
