URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) – The Illinois Department of Public Health has recently highlighted a rise in influenza cases across the state.

Speaking with WCIA on Wednesday, representatives from Carle Health noted that this trend is quite typical for this time of year. The increase in flu symptoms is often linked to the cooling weather and the mingling that occurs during holiday festivities.

To combat respiratory illnesses during this period, Dr. Carla Rafferty advises the regular disinfection of commonly touched surfaces.

“Focus on areas like light switches and doorknobs,” Dr. Rafferty suggested. “This also includes handles on water fountains and frequently touched objects in your home or workplace, such as keyboards and phone receivers. Use a disinfectant for these surfaces.”

She also advises getting a flu vaccine, ideally by October. However, if you haven’t yet, it’s still beneficial to get vaccinated, as flu season extends through March, providing ample time to gain protection.
