In a significant public health update, Illinois will mandate blood lead testing for all children starting July 1, 2026. This initiative marks a crucial step in safeguarding the well-being of the state’s youngest residents.
The new regulation will require automatic blood tests at both 12 and 24 months of age. Additionally, healthcare providers must conduct a lead exposure assessment for all children aged six years and younger through a standardized questionnaire.
“There is no safe level of lead in the blood,” stated Dr. Sameer Vohra, the IDPH Director, in a news release. Highlighting the achievements of their Childhood Lead Program, Dr. Vohra explained that the program has successfully identified thousands of children exposed to lead, facilitating early intervention to mitigate health risks. This new universal testing approach represents a proactive measure in protecting the health of Illinois’ children.
The legislative changes set to take effect on July 1, 2026, seek to broaden these protective measures, underscoring the state’s commitment to public health and safety for its youngest citizens. With this robust approach, Illinois is poised to lead by example in preventive healthcare for children.
If a child’s blood test comes back showing lead levels more than 3.5 micrograms per deciliter, a public health intervention will be required. This means a health inspector would work to determine the source of the lead contamination. If lead is found in the home, the inspector would work with the resident to remove it. A public health nurse would also educate the family on how to protect children from lead exposure.

Last year, Illinois officials announced that all children living in a “high-risk” zip code would be required to be tested for lead exposure. These “high-risk” zip codes are located throughout Illinois, including Central Illinois counties like Christian, DeWitt, Edgar, Ford, Iroquois, Moultrie, Sangamon and Vermilion.
