The state of Illinois is contemplating a significant adjustment to its DUI legislation, with a proposal to reduce the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit from 0.08 to 0.05.
“It’s a change that’s long overdue,” remarked Frank Harris, Director of State Government Affairs for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). “While we’ve seen a decrease in drunk driving fatalities since last year, the overall numbers have risen sharply since the pandemic. Nationally, drunk driving deaths have surged by 22% since 2019, and in Illinois, the increase is even more pronounced at 28%.”
