Saturday night proved to be an unforgettable experience for Illinois basketball enthusiasts, packed with thrilling victories that set the stage for future challenges.
The Illinois men’s basketball team triumphed over VCU, securing their position in the Sweet 16. Meanwhile, in a parallel achievement, the women’s team celebrated a hard-fought victory against Colorado in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
As a seventh seed, the Illini women managed to hold a five-point lead at halftime, successfully fending off multiple rallies by the 10th-seeded Buffaloes. Ultimately, they clinched a 66-57 victory, propelling them into the round of 32.
Key to their success was freshman center Cearah Parchment, who led the team with 21 points. Berry Wallace added 18 points to the scoreboard, while Destiny Jackson contributed 16.
Notably, the Illini, who had not tasted NCAA Tournament victory from 2001 to 2024, have now achieved back-to-back wins under the leadership of head coach Shauna Green.
It’s the first time Illinois women’s basketball has won a game in the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons since 1999-2000.
Illinois is the youngest team in the women’s NCAA Tourmament.
The Illini move on to play two seed Vanderbilt on the Commadores home floor on Monday.
