Incident at Atlanta Airport: Man Accidentally Fires Gun, Police Report

ATLANTA, Ga. — A self-inflicted shooting occurred at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Sunday afternoon, as reported by the Atlanta Police Department (APD).

Authorities state that 59-year-old Douglas E. Smith entered the airport and proceeded to ascend the escalator to a platform area. Upon reaching the top, Smith drew a handgun and shot himself in the left side of his torso.

Smith collapsed immediately, prompting a nearby bystander to intervene by securing the weapon and contacting the police.

Upon arrival, APD officers provided initial medical assistance and subsequently transported Smith to a hospital. He is currently in stable condition.

Smith is facing charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, reckless conduct, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Airport officials said operations have not been affected at this time.
