SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – The Sullivan’s Island Police Department has added additional charges Monday against a man shown harassing Hispanic workers on a video that circulated social media last week.
Police obtained new warrants for two counts of kidnapping against 33-year-old Sean Michael-Emmrich Johnson from Huger.
He was out on bond after being released on charges of kidnapping, impersonating a law enforcement officer, larceny/fraudulent removal or secreting of personal property, and assault and battery in the third degree when he was apprehended Monday.
Currently, Johnson is in custody at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
It all stems from an incident on Ion Avenue on Jan. 29. Sullivan’s Island police responded after receiving a report of a person operating a vehicle without a license.
In the 911 call, the caller who identifies himself as “Sean,” says to the dispatcher, “Well, I got this Mexican here and he doesn’t have a driver’s license […] yeah, he’s illegal.”
Deputy Chief of Police Monty Anders explained the “disturbing” video that circulated online was brought to the department’s attention after the interaction. “This video displayed possible criminal actions by the caller that were not initially reported to police while on scene,” Anders said.
In the video, two men are sitting in a truck when approached by an individual, later identified as Johnson, who claims they are driving without a license. Johnson is heard on the video insulting and threatening the men in the truck. He also takes the driver’s key and claims to be an officer of the law.
“…you got a big old Mexican right here,” the man is heard saying. “You don’t even speak [expletive] English. What’s wrong with you? They’re coming…”
“This is my job. This is my truck. I own this country,” the man later added.
Sullivan’s Island PD said it began investigating after becoming aware of the video and used extensive video and witness interviews to identify Johnson as the suspect.
He turned himself in to the Sullivan’s Police Department at 10:57 p.m. Friday, according to Chief Glenn Meadows.
