CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – In a remarkable show of commitment, three-star quarterback Michael Clayton made a surprise appearance in Champaign to pledge his allegiance to Bret Bielema and the Illinois coaching staff. Despite having offers from several power-conference teams, Clayton chose the Illini in a way that left a lasting impression.
Initially, Bielema and his team were under the impression that the Clayton family intended to meet with them via Zoom. However, they were in for a surprise when Michael Clayton himself walked through the door, eager to announce his decision in person.
“It was quite the moment,” Bielema recalled about Clayton’s visit. “He flew all the way here just to let us know he’s joining Illinois. I’ve never experienced anything like it before. It was truly fantastic.”
Hailing from Miami, Fla., Clayton brings a diverse set of skills to the table, making him a valuable addition to the team. Bielema is particularly enthusiastic about the young quarterback’s potential.
“Michael is incredibly talented,” Bielema praised. “He’s athletic, boasts impressive size, and throws with accuracy. The velocity on his passes is excellent, whether it’s a short touch, mid-range, or long ball.”
Bielema isn’t the only Illini coach excited to work with Clayton.
“I think you’re getting a kid that, he just screams ‘Coach me, coach,’” Illinois quarterbacks coach Art Sitkowski said. “He’s got those eyes where he just wants to get coach at a really, really high level. So, super excited for Michael and his progression to see where it goes.”
Clayton is one of 30 signees making up Illinois’ 2026 recruiting class, its highest-ranked signing group in program history. Click here for more.
