Meta unveiled a new policy on Tuesday specifying that teenagers on Instagram will now have limited access to content akin to PG-13 ratings by default. Altering these settings will now require parental consent.
This adjustment entails that teens with accounts tailored for their age group will encounter visuals and videos on Instagram that mirror the tone of a PG-13 film—excluding depictions of sex, drug use, or hazardous activities.
In a blog post, Meta detailed the scope of the update, highlighting that it will conceal or avoid recommending posts that feature strong language, certain perilous stunts, and content that might promote harmful behaviors, such as images of marijuana paraphernalia. This change is described as the most significant enhancement since the introduction of teen accounts last year.
