CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — With a wave of fresh talent cresting at Eastern Illinois University this summer, the competition to secure the role of starting quarterback is reaching a fever pitch.
The Panthers are showcasing 56 newcomers on their roster this season, which notably includes three transfer quarterbacks who bring with them valuable experience from previous collegiate play.
Among the returning players is redshirt junior Cole LaCrue, who made a remarkable impact last year by setting the school’s record for single-game rushing yards by a quarterback during his initial season. Despite being sidelined later due to an injury, LaCrue is back, gearing up to reclaim his position.
“Cole has dedicated himself to refining his skills, focusing on quick release from the back foot and understanding our strategy,” said head coach Chris Wilkerson. “His ability to swiftly progress through play options and make decisive check-downs is a testament to his growth.”
The Panthers are set to kick off their season on August 27 with an away game against Murray State.
