Internet Erupts in Laughter Over Dwayne Johnson’s Hilarious ‘Moana’ Wig Debut

(NEXSTAR) — Walt Disney Studios unveiled the first looks of its much-anticipated live-action adaptation of the 2016 animated sensation “Moana” on Monday. Yet, it was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who captured the spotlight, overshadowing other new images with his striking portrayal of the demigod Maui.

The internet, never one to miss a beat, erupted into laughter over the wig Johnson donned for the role. Unlike Johnson’s typically well-groomed appearance, Maui sports a mane of wild, ocean-swept hair, sparking a flurry of humorous reactions online.

“Did they just toss the wig and hope it landed right on his head?” joked one Twitter user, referring to the viral images. Another quipped, “Why does he look like he just stepped out of a salon with a blowout?”

Johnson’s decision to take on the role of Maui in “Moana” comes after his critically acclaimed performance as wrestler Mark Kerr in last year’s biopic “The Smashing Machine,” which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. The film was directed by Benny Safdie and led to speculation that Johnson might receive his first Oscar nod.

Despite high hopes during awards season, “The Smashing Machine” secured just one Oscar nomination in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category at the 98th Academy Awards. As Johnson returns to the silver screen with “Moana,” fans are eager to see how this new venture will unfold, wig and all.

Some online joked that the “Moana” wig was retaliation for not getting more awards recognition for the film.

“Dwayne Johnson did not get that Oscar, so he promised to make us pay,” an X user joked.

The movie will feature the film debut of 19-year-old Australian actress Catherine Laga’aia in the title role. Actress Auliʻi Cravalho, who originally voiced the Polynesian heroine Moana, announced in May 2023 that she wouldn’t be returning for the film. Though no reason was given, Cravalho, now 25, is likely now too old to portray the young Disney Princess. The actress served as an executive producer on the film, however, and had a say in casting her replacement.

“Moana” — and Johnson’s wig — are slated for a July 10 release.
