Meet Marshall's 'fairy godmother' behind new pumpkin decorating businesses

MARSHALL, Ill. (WCIA) — For many, it’s a tradition to go out and pick the perfect pumpkin. That was certainly a highlight for Alexis Low, a Danville native turned pumpkin farmer in Clark County.

In fairy tales, pumpkins can turn into carriages. But in ‘Our Town Marshall,’ Low is waving her magic wand, turning pumpkins into elaborate displays throughout the community.

“We provide pumpkin concierge service to the community, local businesses and homeowners,” Low said.

If you see pumpkins, gourds and dried corn stalks set up, there’s a good chance everything was grown on Low Farms just south of Marshall. She and her husband plotted the patch just last year. Now, they’re growing 30 different varieties.

“Some of my favorite ones would be like the pink porcelain dolls and the warties,” Low described.

Once it’s time to pick them, many are displayed for customers to purchase. Others, however, turn into “puzzle pieces” for the ‘pumpkin-y’ presentation.

“They will fall down, they don’t fit, they’ll bring the whole display down,” she demonstrated while putting a display together in front of Marshall’s City Hall.

Low is the fairy godmother transforming spaces into fall-like masterpieces for business owners, families, and even brides and grooms on their wedding day.

“We will deliver, mock up a design, set it up, and then dispose of it at the end of the season,” she said.

Altogether some displays take 45 minutes, others can take several hours. The total time doesn’t bother Low, since she “enjoys being able to share something that’s so special to me with the community,” she said.

Besides, it truly is a dream come true, after begging her parents to buy ground and start a pumpkin patch several years ago. Instead, she found her farming husband and now looks out her back window each morning to the patch she has always dreamed of.

Her farm, where you can purchase pumpkins, is typically open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. She suggests checking the patch’s Facebook page first to see what’s available.
