COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. () — The death of an inmate at Colleton County Detention Center is being investigated by officials.

In July, a 42-year-old man was booked by the Walterboro Police Department in connection with a burglary investigation.

On July 24, a day after his arrest, the inmate was found unresponsive and hanging from the top bunk inside his single-person cell. Colleton County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and after life-saving efforts, the individual was later airlifted to a nearby trauma center.

The inmate passed away on August 2, despite receiving medical care.

Colleton County Sheriff Buddy Hill requested assistance of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to conduct an investigation. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) of Professional Standards is conducting an internal administrative review.

This is an active investigation.
