Israeli Strike Kills Palestinian in Gaza; Latest Middle East News Updates

At least one person has been killed in an Israeli strike in the Gaza Strip, where Palestinians say Israeli attacks have intensified across the enclave. In Yemen, Iran-backed Houthi rebels reported that airstrikes struck the capital around midnight as their renewed conflict with Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government continues to escalate.

Here are the latest developments from the Middle East on Friday. Full coverage is available here.

Israeli strike in central Gaza kills one, health officials say

An Israeli strike on a civilian vehicle in central Gaza on Sunday morning killed one Palestinian and wounded at least 11 others, according to health officials at Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, which received the casualties.

The Israeli military said the attack targeted a known Hamas militant.

Palestinians have reported a sharp increase in Israeli gunfire and airstrikes across Gaza over the past month. Israel says its operations are aimed at Hamas and other militants it considers a threat, and are carried out in response to ceasefire violations, including sporadic attacks.

Israeli strikes have killed at least 1,445 Palestinians in Gaza since a ceasefire with Hamas was reached nearly a year ago, according to the territory’s Health Ministry. U.N. agencies and independent experts generally regard the ministry’s figures as reliable, though they do not distinguish between civilians and militants. Seven Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire.

Houthis report midnight airstrike on Yemen’s capital

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen said airstrikes struck the capital, Sanaa, around midnight as their renewed war with Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government intensifies.

The Houthi media office reported the strikes but provided no additional details. It blamed Saudi Arabia for the attack without offering evidence. Saudi authorities did not immediately comment.

Yemen’s military, which is backed by Riyadh, separately claimed responsibility for the strikes.

Yemeni military spokesman Col. Majed al-Nazili said forces hit “vital targets” in Sanaa and in the northern province of Saada, near the Saudi border.

The Yemeni military also claimed responsibility for airstrikes that struck Sanaa on Saturday morning.

The attacks came amid a major escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Iranian-backed Houthis, reviving Yemen’s civil war after a four-year ceasefire.

British military says projectile struck tanker in Strait of Hormuz

A projectile struck a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and damaged its engine room, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center.

It was not immediately known who launched the attack or when it occurred. The UKMTO said the crew was reportedly safe.

Ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains below prewar levels, as do energy shipments. Iran has lost its near-complete control over the vital waterway as the U.S. Navy works to escort oil tankers through the strait. Those efforts, together with the use of various pipelines, have enabled Gulf countries to restore oil exports to nearly prewar levels.
