In this powerful and heartwarming new episode of “Rooted in Progress,” we turn our focus to a community that often goes unseen—foster children and young adults who have aged out of the system.

Deanne King and Terrance Middlebrooks sit down with  Karen Bowen, CEO of the Nekkts Step Hope Foundation and dedicated advocate with the Children’s Home Network, and Qua’Viona Peeples, a courageous young woman whose life has been deeply impacted by Karen’s work. 

Karen shares her journey into foster care advocacy, having fostered many children herself. Her experiences with youth who have endured trauma have shaped both her mission and her outlook. Through her role, Karen works to place children in safe, loving homes, while her foundation helps young adults build life skills, find stability, and plan for their futures after leaving the system.

Qua’Viona opens up about her time in foster care, what it was like to age out, and how Karen’s nonprofit gave her direction. She reflects on the skills she’s learned, the support she received, and her goals for the future.
