JONESBOROUGH, Tenn., (WJHL) – The Jackson Theatre in Jonesborough is celebrating its 80th anniversary with film screenings, live music, and a raffle on Sunday night.

The theatre was first opened in 1945 and closed in the early 1960s. It reopened just last year as an old-fashioned venue for movies and concerts.

“We show classic films and newer ones,” said Jackson Theatre’s assistant operations director Lori Powell. “We offer a lot of community events. We work with a lot of different entities, like storytelling and the McKinney Center.”

Through Sunday, the theatre is celebrating the opening of the original Jackson Theatre by showing films that premiered when it first opened its doors 80 years ago.

“This week, we are running films all from the 1940s that actually were shown here the first week the Jackson opened,” Powell said.

On Sunday, the real anniversary of the theatre’s opening, the theatre will host Jackpot Night, featuring a tour, a screening of “The Kasan,” and a raffle and reception afterward.

“The whole day’s festivities start with a historic theatre tour and a documentary on the Jackson’s renovations,” said Powell. “Then there is a raffle for everyone attending. It’s free, and you can win up to 30 prizes with a reception afterwards.”

Powell hopes this week can bring some nostalgia to Jonesborough through the silver screen.

“It’s about community and we’re bringing about nostalgia that people can come to a movie they may have seen as a kid and they can bring their grandkids,” Powell said. “It’s about sharing experiences and we try to make each movie an event.”

Tickets to the Jackpot Night are pay-what-you-want, and the screening of “The Kasan” begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
