JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A Johnson City man was indicted after allegedly shooting at officers in January.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Robert Wayne Clifford Hodson, 21, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault – use or display of a deadly weapon.

A TBI news release states Hodson’s charges stem from an officer-involved shooting on Jan. 12, 2025.

Officers with the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) were reportedly trying to find Hodson after an alleged sexual assault that had occurred that night on Walnut Street. Hodson was spotted near the intersection of Maple Street and South Roan Street.

“When Hodson saw the officer, he produced a weapon and shot at the officer, resulting in the officer returning fire,” the release states.

Hodson allegedly ran from the scene while officers continued to pursue him. A second police encounter occurred in the 100 block of E Pine Street, according to the TBI.

During the second encounter, Hodson allegedly produced the weapon again, which led to two JCPD officers firing at and striking him.

Hodson was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Washington County Grand Jury returned indictments against Hodson on Sept. 18. He was served the indictments on Tuesday in the Washington County Jail, where he was being held on other unrelated charges.

According to a Jan. 24 JCPD news release, Hodson was charged with aggravated rape, aggravated assault and interference with emergency calls by Johnson City police in relation to the alleged sexual assault that occurred on Jan. 12.
