JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) said it is investigating a shooting that took place early Saturday morning downtown.
A news release from the JCPD said that officers on foot patrol reported hearing a single gunshot in the area of the Downtown Square, 150 W State of Franklin Rd., at around 2:45 a.m. Saturday.
“Officers quickly converged on the area and found a person with a gunshot wound to the leg,” the release states. Police rendered aid to the victim while awaiting EMS to arrive. The release said the victim was transported to a hospital for treatment.
According to the release, “a man near the scene” identified himself as the shooter and was taken into custody. Andre Johnson, 23, of North Augusta, S.C., was charged with aggravated assault and transported to the Washington County Detention Center.
The release said JCPD’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the incident.
The alleged downtown shooting is the most recent to take place after the City of Johnson City began working to officially limit the “last call” for alcohol sales in the downtown footprint. The city is citing violence and public disturbances as the reasoning for the proposed ordinance.
