WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Authorities reported on Tuesday that the ex-husband of former first lady Jill Biden has been accused of murdering his wife at their residence in Delaware in late December.

William Stevenson, age 77 and a Wilmington resident, was once married to Jill Biden from 1970 until 1975. Caroline Harrison, spokesperson for the Delaware Attorney General, verified via phone that Stevenson is indeed Jill Biden’s former spouse.

Stevenson is currently incarcerated, unable to post the $500,000 bail set following his arrest on Monday for first-degree murder. The charge stems from the alleged killing of Linda Stevenson, 64, on December 28.

Authorities responded to a domestic disturbance call shortly after 11 p.m., discovering a woman unresponsive in the living room, as detailed in an earlier statement. Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Linda Stevenson managed a bookkeeping business and was fondly remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother, as well as a Philadelphia Eagles enthusiast, in her obituary, which notably omits any mention of her husband.

Stevenson was charged in a grand jury indictment after a weekslong investigation by detectives in the Delaware Department of Justice.

It was not immediately clear if Stevenson has a lawyer. He founded a popular music venue in Newark called the Stone Balloon in the early 1970s.

Jill Biden married U.S. Sen. Joe Biden in 1977. He served as U.S. president from January 2021 to January 2025.
