John Ternus officially steps into the role of Apple CEO on Tuesday, ushering in a new chapter for one of the world’s most influential technology companies. His appointment brings Tim Cook’s 15-year run at the top to a close — a period in which Apple’s market value surged to $4.6 trillion, powered largely by the enduring global dominance of the iPhone.
The leadership change arrives at a defining moment for Apple and the broader tech industry. Artificial intelligence is reshaping Silicon Valley with a force not seen since Steve Jobs introduced the original iPhone in 2007. For Apple, the AI era has begun unevenly, with the company facing criticism after delays and setbacks in rolling out the next-generation features it had promised nearly two years earlier.
Apple attempted to regain momentum earlier this year by showcasing a fresh wave of artificial intelligence tools, including improvements to Siri. The company framed its AI strategy around privacy, usefulness and everyday iPhone experiences as it works to narrow the gap with faster-moving competitors in the artificial intelligence space.
For Ternus, the job will demand more than the hardware engineering expertise that helped define his rise inside Apple. As chief executive, he will be tasked with keeping the company relevant in the fast-moving AI race while also managing complex supply chain pressures and high-stakes political relationships, including with President Donald Trump, who publicly praised Cook on Tuesday.

Leading Apple will also test Ternus’s ability to build and sustain relationships beyond the walls of Cupertino. Cook spent years carefully cultivating ties with Trump while steering Apple through trade disputes, tariffs and business risks tied to Asia, where much of the company’s manufacturing network is based. Even as Cook gives up the CEO title, he is expected to remain an important bridge for Apple in his new role as executive chairman, particularly in preserving the company’s relationship with Trump.
Ternus worked on some of Apple’s signature products under Cook, including the Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro. He will headline next week’s launch of the latest iPhone at Apple’s Cupertino, California, headquarters.
