JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Board of Commissioners is seeking applications to fill vacancies on multiple volunteer boards and committees.
Any resident interested in serving on the following boards can apply online. The deadline for the application is Nov. 27.
Appointments to the boards and committees are scheduled to be made in January 2026, according to a news release from the City of Johnson City.
Board of Building Codes
- Hears and decides appeals and variances to the Johnson City Building Code, questions of code interpretation, oversees examinations of contractors to perform work in the community, recommends code changes
- Two appointments licensed in residential building and plumbing, each for a three-year term
- City residency required
Board of Dwelling Standards and Review
- Determines action regarding substandard housing/commercial structures within City limits
- One appointment for a three-year term
- City residency required
Board of Zoning Appeals
- Hears and decides appeals to provisions of the zoning code, considers applications for special exceptions and decides questions of interpretation of the code
- Four appointments for a three-year term
- City residency required
Civil Service Commission
- Addresses Police and Fire employees’ civil service matters and certifies entry-level and promotional rosters
- Two appointments for a two-year term (One position must be nominated by and represent the Police Department, one position must be nominated by and represent the Fire Department)
- City residency required
Golf Advisory Board
- Recommends policies, procedures, rules and regulations of golf courses’ operations
- Four appointments for a three-year term
- City residency required
Historic Zoning Commission
- Considers conservation zoning for the preservation of historical structures
- Two appointments for a five-year term
- City residency required
Johnson City Housing Authority
- Establishes policy/procedures governing the operation of the Housing Authority
- Two appointments for a five-year term
Johnson City Senior Services Advisory Council
- Makes recommendations on matters affecting planning, support and programming for the Senior Center
- Three appointments for a three-year term
- City residency required
Washington County Board of Equalization
- Responsible for reviewing the tax assessment roll, hearing complaints and appeals of taxpayers within their jurisdiction
- Two appointments for a three-year term
- City residency required
