In an unsettling incident at a Johnson City Waffle House, Raekwon Grimes, a 25-year-old man, appeared in court on Wednesday following his arrest. The charges stem from a shooting that left a victim with multiple gunshot wounds in the restaurant’s parking lot.

Grimes voluntarily surrendered to the Johnson City Police Department on Tuesday. His surrender came after the police had publicly identified him as a suspect in the early Sunday morning shooting, which took place around 4 a.m. at the Waffle House situated on North State of Franklin Road.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police discovered a person suffering from several gunshot injuries. As the investigation progressed, the authorities charged Grimes with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon, marking a crucial development in the case.

The JCPD charged Grimes with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Grimes was appointed a public defender during his arraignment in Washington County court on Wednesday.

State prosecutors asked for a $100,000 bond. Grimes’s defense asked for a lower amount due to his inability to pay; however, the judge chose to set his bond at $100,000 because of his prior convictions and failures to appear.

Grimes is set to appear in court on Nov. 5, 2025.
