Jonesborough Celebrates Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony with Festive Enthusiasm

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) – A simple flick of a switch heralded the beginning of the holiday festivities in Tennessee’s most historic town with the traditional tree lighting ceremony.

Before illuminating the towering 60-foot Fraser fir, visitors enjoyed the Whoville Shop and Hop. Isabel Hawley-Lopez, who organizes events for the Town of Jonesborough, explained that patrons could explore downtown stores while indulging in Whoville and Grinch-themed delicacies.

“These events are crucial for our local businesses,” Hawley-Lopez noted. “Supporting small, local shops is especially vital during the holiday season.”

This year’s honor of lighting the tree went to Susan Painter, whose grandmother originally planted the majestic fir. A native of Jonesborough, Painter expressed her gratitude and pride at being involved in the ceremony.

“I was like, whoa, are you serious?” Painter asked. “And, I’ve got my grandmother’s coat on tonight. We love it.”

She said it’s been great to see how much the event has grown over the years.

“It didn’t used to be this big, but I think it’s wonderful,” Painter said. “Even as cold as it is tonight, there’s still just so many people, and it’s wonderful.”
