AUGUSTA, Ga. () – New information has emerged regarding the situation surrounding the principal of Josey High School, who is currently on administrative leave.

While specifics are scarce, it is confirmed that Dr. Derrias Priestly has been placed on administrative leave for an unspecified duration.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office reports that 39-year-old Priestly was taken into custody on Wednesday, February 4th, facing a charge of Simple Battery Against a Public School Employee.

On Friday, January 23rd, 2026, a letter was dispatched to the parents and guardians of T.W. Josey students by Dr. David Hall, who serves as the Assistant Superintendent of High School Administrative Services for the Richmond County School System, addressing Priestly’s leave and the change in school leadership.

In the correspondence, Dr. Hall noted that Priestly is “on leave for an undetermined amount of time” and assured that “to maintain leadership continuity and daily operations, Melisa Clark will immediately assume the role of substitute principal.”

Melisa Clark, former principal of Richmond County Technical Magnet School, is serving as the substitute principal at Josey.

According to Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Richmond County School System Police are handling the case.

On Thursday, February 5th, the Richmond County School System released the following statement:

“The Richmond County School System has been made aware of pending charges against Derrias Priestley. Once allegations were made against the administrator, the School System moved immediately to initiate a formal investigation. The individual remains on administrative leave with pay for an indeterminate amount of time as we complete the internal investigation. In accordance with policy, the School System will fully cooperate with the relevant authorities, as appropriate. The School System remains committed to maintaining a safe and supportive educational environment for its students and staff.

“Because the investigation involves a personnel matter, the School System is unable to provide any additional information at this time. Thank you for your understanding.”
