WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has unequivocally quashed rumors of his departure from the bench. On Friday, he confirmed his continued role on the Supreme Court, addressing recent waves of speculation about his potential retirement.
In an interview featured in The Wall Street Journal’s editorial column, the 76-year-old justice firmly stated, “Obviously, I’m here for another term.”
Discussions about Alito’s judicial tenure intensified back in June. A veteran reporter at National Public Radio mistakenly released a prematurely prepared article announcing his retirement, fueling frenzied speculation.
Although the article was swiftly retracted and the court labeled it as incorrect, speculation lingered. A resignation would have opened the door for former Republican President Donald Trump to appoint a fourth justice to the high court.
During a rare dialogue in his chambers, Justice Alito spoke candidly about the state of the Supreme Court, dismissing claims that political bias influences his legal judgments.
“I vote in every case the way I think the case should be decided,” he said. “If that means a high correlation with what Trump wants, fine. If it means zero correlation with what Trump wants, fine as well.”
