Juvenile Out of Hospital After Ocoee High School Shooting

OCOEE, Fla. – Newly released body camera footage captures the moments after a juvenile was shot in the leg in the parking lot of Ocoee High School following a Friday night football game, the Ocoee Police Department said.

The shooting was reported at about 9:30 p.m., after the Ocoee High and Jones High football game. Police said Monday afternoon that the injured juvenile had been released from the hospital.

In the body camera video, an officer can be seen providing medical care to the victim at the scene.

News 6 shared the footage with Belen Cespedes, a nearby high school junior who said she heard the gunshot from inside her home.

“It makes sense for students to kind of freak out and start running,” she said. “It’s a really stressful thing to watch and honestly, kind of hard to watch. I can’t imagine how the students feel, honestly.”

Cespedes said her family first wondered whether the sound might have been fireworks.

“It’s a closed neighborhood, right, so you don’t typically see that kind of stuff,” she said.

Orange County Public Schools said the individuals involved were not known to have any connection to either Ocoee High School or Jones High School.

Charles Flores, who recently graduated from Ocoee High, said he had witnessed fights following games before but did not expect one of those incidents to escalate into a shooting.

Even so, Flores said the shooting would not stop him from attending future sporting events in the district.

“I still feel safe going to the games,” he said. “I’m still going to go. I don’t have a problem with it, and I think Ocoee will catch the people that did it.”

News 6 also asked OCPS whether security measures could change at upcoming football games and other district events.

In a statement, the district said, “District staff routinely review and update procedures to identify opportunities for improvement and enhance campus safety.”

Ocoee police said 10 officers were assigned to the game and that the department will work with the school district to evaluate security needs going forward.

Investigators are asking anyone who was in the parking lot to review their phones for photos or video that could help the investigation and to contact police.
