MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A St. Petersburg woman is fighting for her life after being in a car crash on the Hernando Desoto Bridge in Bradenton. The crash took the life of her unborn baby.

KaLeah Spells’ mother, Tracey Beasley, said doctors are calling Spells a miracle following the wreck. The family is asking for prayers, and they want to see justice served in the case.

Beasley was taking pictures of her daughter each month, to show her growing belly, with her first grandchild. Beasley said Spells was eight months pregnant, excited, and was working two jobs to provide for her baby.

On Sunday morning, Beasley said Spells was leaving work when she was hit by a wrong-way driver.

Beasley took pictures at the scene showing what looks like a head-on crash.

“Oh, I could’ve fell to my knees, but I had to get to the hospital,” said Beasley. “The whole front end is smashed in. They had to extract her from the back passenger door.”

When Beasley got to the hospital, she was told her first grandchild took a breath but did not survive.

“It was a girl. She was 3 pounds, 16 inches, a head full of hair, beautiful. KaLeah was going to name her Klever,” said Beasley. “I got to see her, hold her, take pictures with her, tell her grandma miss her and love her.”

Meanwhile, Spells kept fighting. Beasley said at one point that doctors were going to stop trying to revive her, but Beasley begged them to try again.

“40 minutes went by, he came out, he told me Tracey, KaLeah is a miracle,” said Beasley. “KaLeah died three times. And I begged him to just try one more time, and he did, and that lets you know that the Lord wasn’t ready for her to go.”

The Palmetto Police Department is working this case, but the agency could not get us the police report in time for this story to run. The story will be updated once the report comes in.

Beasley said Spells has two broken legs and fractures. The family is asking for your prayers while her long recovery gets underway.
