AUGUSTA, Ga. – On Tuesday, community leader Karen Gordon made headlines by declaring her candidacy for the Georgia House of Representatives District 130. This announcement comes in the wake of a special election being scheduled to fill the vacancy left by Lynn Heffner, formerly known as Gladney, who resigned on January 5, 2026, amidst concerns about rebuilding uncertainty.

Gordon has built a reputation as a unifier in the Augusta area, recognized for her efforts in bringing together a diverse array of stakeholders including residents, small businesses, farmers, artists, nonprofits, and civic leaders. Her work has been pivotal in strengthening neighborhoods and creating expanded opportunities for the local community.

“I’m announcing my intent to run because District 130 deserves steady, prepared leadership during a time of transition,” Gordon stated. She expressed her readiness to translate her community experience into effective action at the state level, highlighting her history of turning ideas into tangible results.

Gordon’s campaign will focus on practical leadership that emphasizes community stability, economic opportunity, and forging partnerships that lead to genuine progress. Her candidacy promises to bring a seasoned perspective to the Georgia House, underpinned by years of dedicated service and collaboration within her community.

Gordon emphasized a practical approach to leadership focused on community stability, economic opportunity, and partnerships that deliver real results.

“Our challenges don’t exist in silos,” Gordon said. “When small businesses, creatives, growers, and community developers work together, we create stronger neighborhoods and a more resilient local economy. Collaboration is how we move forward.”

Throughout her career, Gordon has helped develop initiatives that support local food systems, creative enterprises, workforce development, and neighborhood-based solutions by working across sectors and building consensus.

“I believe representation should be visible, responsive, and rooted in the community,” Gordon added. “This campaign is about service, readiness, and putting people first.”

The special election for Georgia House District 130 is expected to take place on March 10, 2026.

Gordon plans to continue meeting with residents and community stakeholders in the weeks ahead as she prepares for the qualifying process.
