Kennedy Center Announces Two-Year Renovation Closure Starting July Amid Performers’ Backlash, Trump Confirms

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington will undergo a two-year closure for construction, starting in July.

Trump’s declaration on social media follows a series of event cancellations that have occurred since he replaced the previous administration and attached his name to the venue. Notably, he did not address these recent cancellations in his announcement.

The timing of Trump’s proposal coincides with the recent premiere of “Melania,” a documentary about the first lady at this iconic location. The plan, pending approval from the Kennedy Center’s board—now comprised predominantly of Trump-appointed members—is part of his broader vision. Trump also serves as the chair of the board of trustees.

In his social media message, Trump stated, “This critical decision, influenced by insights from many Highly Respected Experts, aims to transform a neglected center into a World Class Bastion of Arts, Music, and Entertainment.” He described the center as having suffered from financial and structural issues for many years.

In light of these developments, several prominent arts organizations have withdrawn from scheduled appearances. Most recently, composer Philip Glass pulled his Symphony No. 15, “Lincoln,” citing a misalignment between the center’s current values and the message of his work.

Earlier this month, the Washington National Opera announced that it will move performances away from the Kennedy Center in another high-profile departure following Trump’s takeover of the U.S. capital’s leading performing arts venue.

A spokesperson for the Kennedy Center did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
