KEYSVILLE, Ga – A startling development has unfolded in Keysville, where the town’s mayor, James Neely, finds himself at the center of controversy following an altercation with a city employee. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed Neely’s arrest stemming from the incident.

The confrontation reportedly took place in the mayor’s office, where a heated discussion between Mayor Neely and Anthony Smith, a maintenance worker, spiraled out of control. The dispute was allegedly over discrepancies related to Smith’s driver’s license, which affected his ability to operate a city vehicle.

A witness, who was initially present in the office, recounted hearing the argument grow increasingly loud after she attempted to offer information that might clarify the situation. She was subsequently asked to leave the office. However, the argument soon spilled into the hallway, drawing more attention as it neared the lobby of City Hall.

Another witness, who observed the incident from outside, described seeing Neely in close proximity to Smith. The witness reported that Mayor Neely shoulder-checked Smith, prompting Smith to raise his arm to distance himself. At this point, Neely allegedly struck Smith in the face.

Following the incident, authorities have charged Mayor Neely with disorderly conduct, marking a significant and troubling episode in the city’s administration.
