A Kingsport resident has been sentenced to over four years in prison for her role in a tax fraud scheme, as announced by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

The DOJ, along with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee, revealed that 35-year-old Aylissa Glidewell received her sentence on Thursday. She faced charges of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud.

Authorities reported that Glidewell worked with accomplices to submit fraudulent tax returns. These returns improperly claimed credits intended to support struggling businesses amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The scheme involved the creation of fictitious businesses solely to exploit these government-issued credits, according to the DOJ.

The release further detailed that Glidewell filed multiple bogus tax returns and arranged for the resulting refunds to be sent to addresses managed by her and her co-conspirators.

The false returns claimed reportedly totaled more than $3.4 million in tax refunds. The DOJ reports the IRS paid $1.8 million of those false claims.

Glidewell was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay over $1.8 million in restitution to the U.S.
