Kingsport WWII Hero Marks Milestone: Celebrating 103 Years of Legacy and Service

In Kingsport, Tennessee, a World War II veteran marked a significant milestone on Thursday by celebrating his 103rd birthday.

Everett Burns Gilliam was honored with a surprise birthday celebration, organized by his family, friends, and fellow residents at Brookdale Kingsport.

In related community news, a Kingsport church is currently selling pumpkins and will be hosting both a fall festival and a blood drive this month.

Gilliam’s journey began when he was drafted into the Army just two days before Christmas. After serving his country for three years, he returned home to pursue a career as an auto mechanic.

Reflecting on his military service, Gilliam fondly recalls his time spent in Australia as one of the highlights of his experience.

Gilliam said he enjoyed working on automobiles and traveling after he came home.

“I wanted to do my own thing and travel and not get settled down,” he said. “And I did travel quite a bit, all over the country after I got out of the Army. That was my ambition.”

When asked what his biggest piece of advice was, Gilliam stressed the importance of being spiritually prepared.

“Be prepared for eternity, that’s what it’s all about. I believe we’re all going to die one of these days, the flesh and body, but the soul never dies.”

Gilliam said that while turning 103 “feels old,” he remains thankful. He said his mobility is currently limited, but he is working toward getting around without a wheelchair.
