SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Savannah residents gathered Thursday at Forsyth Park to honor people affected by domestic violence.

The sky was lit with hundreds of candles as community members gathered for a moment of reflection and remembrance.

SAFE Shelter, the organizer of the vigil, is Savannah’s only dedicated domestic violence shelter. The purpose of the vigil was to honor lives lost and to show support for survivors.

Speakers shared stories of loss, survival and hope, reminding everyone of the importance of protecting victims and preventing future violence.

Organizers said they hope the event inspires ongoing community action to raise awareness, prevent abuse and protect those at risk.

SAFE Shelter will continue hosting events throughout October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
