Largo residents deal with aftermath of EF-1 tornado

LARGO, Fla. (WFLA) — Martha Hicks was visiting a cousin when a tornado ripped through her Largo neighborhood.

She came home to find debris everywhere on her street and destruction all around her.

Then, she took a look at video recorded by her security camera. It’s video that everyone is talking about.

“I said, ‘Oh my God, look at that house went up in the air and back up again,’ the whole house,” Hicks said.

The video shows a home across the street being ripped apart by the winds and then the home next to hers is lifted off the ground, where it’s suspended for a few seconds before it crashes back down.

Hicks thought of her neighbor next door.

“I saw that house and thought, ‘Oh my God,’ that’s all I could think about is she OK,” Hicks said.

Incredibly, her neighbor only suffered minor injuries.

“I guess she’s got a few scrapes and scratches but other than that — she’s a little tiny lady too,” Hicks said.

Roy Magnan was in the same neighborhood and came outside just as the tornado was approaching.

“I just saw the tornado coming and I yelled to my girlfriend, ‘We gotta get out of here’,” Magnan said.

He said he saw the classic shape of a tornado, not far away.

“A big funnel, and you could see all of the debris, swirling around,” Magnan said.

Pam Walker and others said the tornado was a total surprise.

“No warning, no sound with it, it was just there,” Walker said.

There is damage on many of the streets around her home.

“I heard something hit the house, my house, and it was just a plastic barrel and then I had a tree that laid clean over,” Walker said.

Her friend, Lori Johnson, wasn’t at home when the storm hit. Walker called her to tell her what was going on.

Johnson couldn’t believe what she found when she arrived.

“I never thought it would happen to me, like you don’t think it’s going to happen to anybody,” Johnson said.

Her home suffered a great deal of damage.

“Lost my roof, my shed — it doesn’t have a roof, my carport. The ceiling is falling in, in my living room and in my spare bedroom, I can see the sky,” Johnson said.

A crew worked to put a tarp over her home Thursday in an effort to prevent more damage.

“I don’t know if it’s salvageable or not and I work from home, so I have to find somewhere to work,” Johnson said.
