BIG SOTNE GAP, Va. (WJHL) — Southwest Virginia has lost one of its most well-known high school coaches. Phil Robbins, who led football programs at John Battle, Christiansburg, and Powell Valley, passed away Sunday at the age of 81.
Robbins began his head coaching career at John Battle High School in 1971 before moving on to Christiansburg, where he guided the Blue Demons to their first playoff appearance in 1981.
In 1983, he took over at Powell Valley High School, where he spent nearly three decades. Robbins compiled a 268–81 record with the Vikings, capturing seven state football championships between 1985 and 1998. His teams also won two state track and field titles during his tenure.
Several of his former players went on to compete at the college and professional levels, including NFL running backs Thomas and Julius Jones.
Robbins remained active in the community after retiring from coaching, assisting with the football program at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. In 2024, Bullitt Park in Big Stone Gap dedicated its field in his honor.
Robbins is survived by his wife, Patty, and their three children.
