SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Technological breakthroughs have significantly enhanced healthcare, particularly by enabling early detection of heart problems, often before symptoms are noticeable to the patient.

One evening, Daniel Smith was experiencing an ordinary night when his smartwatch unexpectedly chimed, alerting him to seek medical attention. This notification from his device played a crucial role in diagnosing a perilous stage of atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation, commonly known as AFib, involves an erratic heartbeat that can lead to the formation of blood clots within the heart, heightening the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other cardiovascular complications, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Smith recounted his story to on Monday, explaining that even a hospital’s machinery failed to detect any irregularities with his heart.

“We went there, they performed an EKG, and everything appeared normal,” Smith explained. “So, I shared the data from my phone with the doctor, who then confirmed I was in AFib and recommended a consultation with Dr. Sim.”

Doctors said this type of technology is becoming an important tool for detecting heart conditions like atrial fibrillation, which affects millions of Americans.
