RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — Officers with the Rantoul Police Department responded to Lincoln’s ChalleNGe Academy last month after reports that a student was being battered by a staff member.

The incident happened on Aug. 21. In a news release, the police department said a 16-year-old male cadet was interviewed about the battery allegation. During the interview, “minor injuries” were visible, police said.

The 16-year-old was taken into protective custody by the Rantoul Police Department. The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) was also notified.

The Rantoul Police Department identified 25-year-old Isaiah Wallace of Ludlow as the suspect in the battery. On Aug. 25, police interviewed Wallace and he admitted his involvement in the battery, authorities said. Wallace was arrested for aggravated battery and brought to the Champaign County Correctional Center.

Previously, WCIA reported that a Lincoln’s ChalleNGe staff member had been fired for “policy violations.” A spokesperson with DCFS confirmed to WCIA that the agency is investigating the academy but declined to provide further details on the investigation. WCIA has been unable to confirm if the DCFS investigation is related to the battery incident.

The Rantoul Police Department said that anyone with additional information should contact them at 217-333-8911. To submit an anonymous tip, contact Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477, visit them online or use the “P3 Tips” mobile app.
