SAVANNAH, GA. () — A local company is turning teamwork into community impact – 20,000 times over. With summer break just around the corner, and kids losing access to school meals, this couldn’t come at a better time.

went behind the scenes to speak with officials setting up for Thursday’s big packing event.

Breakfast is the one meal food banks say they can never get enough of. Thursday morning, Second Harvest will have its wish granted as thousands of these oatmeal packs will be delivered to their doorstep.

Inside Owens Corning’s Savannah Plant, employees and customers will work together to pack 20,000 servings of breakfast. The oatmeal will help feed kids and seniors through Second Harvest’s backpack program and Meals on Wheels.

Food banks say breakfast is one of the most needed – and hardest to get – donations. With summer break around the corner and school meals disappearing, this effort comes at the perfect time.

“A lot of times people that are hungry are unseen. They are among us, but you would never know. So doing a project like this, serves those people that are overlooked. That still need food. It is a natural right for anyone in our country to not go hungry. The importance of these projects, and Owens Corning family coming together, is simply a win-win across the board,” said Bradford Flemming, the Partnerships Manager for Harvest Pack.

The project is powered by Harvest Pack, a nonprofit that helps groups host hands-on meal-packing events. With Second Harvest serving over 7,000 meals to kids daily this summer, efforts like this make a big difference for families in need.

“Seniors are really struggling—choosing between food, medicine, or paying a light bill. So being able to get this extra food in and put it right back out into our community means everything. This comes especially with kids getting out of school soon. Families still have to feed them all summer long,” said Mary Jane Crouch, the Executive Director of Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.

Here are some ways in which you can help fight hunger in the Coastal Empire:

  • Host your own meal-packing event at HarvestPack.org
  • Donate to Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia
  • Volunteer time to help local food programs all summer long
  • Donate to Senior Citizens Inc.

This is Owens Corning’s first meal-packing event in Savannah, but organizers say it likely won’t be the last.
