As prom season approaches, a local initiative is stepping in to ease the financial burden on students and their families.

The Giving Gown event made a triumphant return this past Saturday, providing free formal attire to teenagers throughout the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). Organizers successfully amassed a collection of approximately 1,000 gowns, ensuring a diverse array of styles and sizes for students to explore.

With options ranging from sequined to lace and beaded designs, the event showcased a variety of looks generously donated by the community. The event’s mission: to assist young women in finding their dream prom dress without the hefty price tag that typically accompanies such purchases.

“With the rise in living expenses and school-related fees, including those for prom and homecoming gowns, this initiative is crucial,” explained Taylor Newton, Director of Community Involvement at NewsChannel 6.

“Since my own high school graduation, these costs have increased by hundreds of dollars. If we can alleviate a portion of that financial strain for parents and students and offer an experience that boosts their confidence, that’s exactly what we aim to achieve,” Newton added.

Many students said the opportunity to shop for free gave them confidence to choose gowns they truly loved.

For some, the event marked a milestone moment. Leah, a senior at Swainsboro High School, said finding her dress will make her final prom feel even more special.

“I’m excited because it’s my senior prom. It’s my final prom, and I want to go out on a big bang,” she said.

“The reason I like it for free is so I don’t have to pay that much.”

Organizers say the supportive environment also made the experience more meaningful.

“This is really uplifting, and I really hope that they find what they’re looking for, like me and everybody else,” said Jordian Isaac of South Aiken High School.

“I want everyone to be happy with what they pick.”

If students were unable to attend the event but still need a gown, organizers say they can reach out directly for assistance.
