AUGUSTA, Ga () – May 1st is International Workers Day and one local organization took to the streets to protest in support of workers rights and against union cuts.
The 50501 Organization of Augusta was created at the end of March and many community members as well as local organizations have been supporting their protests.
50501 means 50 protests, 50 states, and 1 movement.
One of the organizers, Lisa Wohlrab, explains more about why they were out protesting.
“The executive order taking away collective bargaining from several of the unions and federal agencies. For example, the VA, which for 5052 veterans is a big deal because we need our VA workers to be taken care of so we can get the care that we need.” said Wohlrab.
Every event they put on they choose a different local organization to raise donations for and Golden Harvest was chosen for this one.
Wohlrab said they have one goal in mind.
“One of the big things about 5051, both veterans, Augusta, national, is that it’s a non-partisan organization. This isn’t about politics, it’s not about party, it’s about upholding the constitution, defending the constitution and executive overreach.” Wohlrab said.
She said it’s great to get together with people who they may not have met had it not been for these events.
“It’s nice to know that there are people out there who feel the same way, and that’s a big thing that came out of 4/5, was so many people came up to us and were like ‘I’m not alone anymore’. It really warms our hearts that they can find likeminded people in the area.” Wohlrab said.
Their next meeting will be held on D-Day, May 6th.
