BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. () – A scam circulating across the nation has hit close to home.

Scammers have been sending out emails or text messages about toll charges and unpaid parking violations, according to officials.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) said they’ve come across some specifically from “Southern Connector” urging you to avoid a late fee of $35 by paying the invoice immediately at the link provided.

“DO NOT click on the link or type the link into your web browser,” BCSO said in a Facebook post. “This is a scam site.”

“We know that many individuals have been traveling due to the holidays so please be leery of any suspicious messages related to paying some type of fee,” the post continued.

Anyone who feels they’ve been a victim of a scam can report it to BCSO’s non-emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777.
